One of these jars sold recently for $19,000. I was a bit surprised.
I believe that that's probably the highest price I've seen paid for a black
jar. I expected around $10,000 but you never know what might strike
somebody's fancy. There's another on sale at another auction now so it
will be interesting to see what it goes for. I'm guessing somebody
else saw the high price and is hoping to get a similar price on theirs.
I think it must be a case of Hemingray hysteria - some people go nuts over
Hemingray jars. There's a great page on hemingray jars I just found
located
here. Also, I guess that this means there are at least three out
there in the world.
An interesting thing about this jar is how it was retooled to make the
black reverse CFJCo mason. At
least on my two, they obviously weren't made in the same molds as a glance
at the front of each of them shows. I'd be interested in knowing if
there are some reverse CFJCo jars which seem to match this front or reverse
HGCo jars which match the front of my CFJCo. I don't think the latter,
since that jar has a "+" on the front which seems to be well known for this
jar but I've never heard about such a thing on a reverse HGCo jar.
The monogram on the reverse of this jar is
here.
