This jar has an interesting history. The Independent jar is fairly
common in clear. For years there had been a very few midget
Independent lids in cobalt blue so people had assumed that perhaps somewhere
there would be cobalt blue midget Independent jars. Well, they didn't
turn up and they didn't turn up, but eventually, this quart did turn up.
Some people up in Virginia had it in their closet and had no idea it was
worth anything. They found out, in the end, that it was worth quite a
bit when I paid them a hefty sum for it, although they were a bit skeptical
all the way. I really gave them what I thought was a good, reasonable
price to pay. In the end, I find that trying to lead people on just
causes them to dig in their heels and you'll never get the jar so my basic
policy is to tell them as honestly as I know about the jar if they ask me
about it. On the other hand, if I saw one labelled for $10 in an
antique shop, that's another story...
So in the end, everyone was expecting a midget and got a quart so there
may very well still be midgets out there. What a find that would be!
The quart is exciting enough. I'm going to eventually send this lid
away to have it heat stained to blue. This is just for cosmetic
purposes, but cosmetics mean a lot in jar collecting.
