The Pogue is a rare jar on its own. Most of them are a kind of dull
grayish aqua which really isn't all that appealing. This is the only
one known in this bright, crystal clear cornflower blue. Sadly, it was
left in a library display overnight one time (long before I ever owned it)
and the next day the whole bottom had broken off. I'm guessing that
there had been stress in those sharp corners at the bottom over the years
and in the display under the hot lights, the heat caused it to pop.
Luckily, the repair job was pretty fabulous and it's difficult to locate
any remainder of the crack today so I really don't feel all that bad about
it. Also, this is the only one, so you just live with it. Like I
always say, if you want the Venus de Milo complete with her arms, then you
don't want the Venus de Milo.
You can see the heavy iron pontil in the pushed up base of this jar.
It's another early wax sealer where the shoulder was pushed down.
Compared to my other aqua pogue, the neck is far longer and sticks out
further. I have no idea whether this is the standard shape or whether
they vary wildly from jar to jar. Given the crudity, the latter is not
an impossibility.
