This amber midget is known as the Hathaway midget. John Hathaway is
one of the more prolific jar sellers in the collecting community.
Several years ago a cache of these jars was found and John made a deal and
bought them. He resold them at an extremely reasonable price and I
bought one of those original ones. I thought at the time that I ought
to buy two and wish now I'd carried through with that. At the same
time, I wondered if the number of jars would depress the price but over the
years they've gone up substantially from the price that John originally sold
them at.
They were made in Virginia. I'm assuming a manufacturing date of
around 1880-1890 or so. They are a lovely shade of orange amber and,
while worth less than most other amber midgets, they still fetch a pretty
good price.
