This is one of the most beautiful and singular colors in any original
jar. When I first saw one of these jars (there are three or four I
believe) I thought it was a repro. I just couldn't believe that
anybody would have voluntarily made a jar this color except in today's repro
market.
Well, not true. This is an original old jar in a color that no
other fruit jar that I'm aware of, comes in. When I put this jar
between a deep cobalt and a teal it appears to be about halfway between.
I've taken to calling it "peacock" after a suggestion from Greg Spurgeon.
This one was dug up from an old well in Indiana and put up on Ebay with a
$20 reserve. I ended up paying $10,000 for it and it was in pretty bad
shape - you couldn't see through it because it had been buried for so long.
I sent it off to Dave Rittenhouse for cleaning and he did an amazing job.
It looks just gorgeous - one of the best in my collection. You can
still see a very few scratches on it which speak to it's long history
underground, but believe me, in your hands it's a stunning jar.
I'll also mention a very popular reproduction that is easy to recognize.
In the 70s, several half gallon repros were made in various "dream" colors
with a Hero cross on the back. You can see the Hero Cross at the top
of this jar. It's named after the Hero Glass company which used it to
mark their jars. Anyway, the hero cross on the back of the repros is a
sloppily done version with rounded corners where you see the very sharp
corners in this original. There are no known original half gallons
with the hero cross on back and the sloppily drawn hero cross just nails any
of these as a reproduction.
